Sun Secure Global Desktop

The modern enterprise requires universal access to critical applications and data. Organisations have workers deployed in offices both around the corner and around the world that need seamless access to company data resources. Additionally, many companies have a sizable remote workforce that seldom visits an office at all. But how do you manage these very different groups of users in a decentralised work place? By centralising your applications and data with Tarantella Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition 4.

Built around the idea of 'Server Based Computing' where applications are not run locally but are instead executed on reliable application servers housed in the corporate data center and simply displayed on the client device, Enterprise Edition 4:

• Allows application access from any location over a secure connection without specialised hardware

• Centralises management of users and applications

• Enables auditing of application usage

• Dramatically reduces the time to securely deliver applications

• Ensures users can access only applications they're authorised to use

• Increases resiliency by housing application sessions at the data centre and not on individual PCs

With Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition 4, users access applications or full desktops running on remote servers from their client device. The client can be a full PC, a thin client or anything in-between.

Enterprise Edition Architecture

SGD v4.2 uses an innovative architecture that integrates diverse application servers and client devices with little or no disruption to the existing IT environment:

• Publish Linux, UNIX, Microsoft Windows, Mainframe and Midrange applications

• Devices such as Microsoft Windows PCs, UNIX or Linux workstations, Apple Macintosh, internet devices and network computers can all be used as clients

• A wide range of connection types is supported, and the Adaptive Internet Protocol (AIP) ensures optimal performance over complex network routes with varying bandwidths

• AIP employs heuristics to determine the type of device and network connection in use and dynamically adapts to optimise performance

SGD v4.2 is typically hosted on one or more dedicated servers, centrally storing a wide range of information about the users and their applications. To access their applications, users simply authenticate themselves to an Enterprise Edition server through their web browser. The server checks its data store of user and application information to determine which applications each user is authorised to access.

This set of applications is then presented to users on their Secure Global Desktop — an HTML-based desktop showing icons for each permitted application. At all times, Enterprise Edition software manages connections, user sessions and security, providing a record of all actions.

Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition is designed as a modular, scalable and flexible solution. It is ideally suited for use by data centres of all types, including application service provision and other service providers that need to deploy a mix of applications to large numbers of geographically dispersed users with a range of client devices and connectivity types.
